Earthquake Preparedness
Important earthquake-preparedness measures to take.
Below are helpful hints to secure your home, and the steps to take in the event an earthquake occurs.
Preparedness measures:
Customers should know how to shut off their gas by reviewing these very simple instructions.
Secure natural gas equipment to minimize their movement during a quake.
Keep combustibles like paint cans and rags away from furnace and water heater.
Replace semi-rigid gas connectors with flexible connectors.
Earthquake shut off valves (equipment that senses ground movement or shaking and shuts off the flow of gas automatically) can be purchased through independent contractors.
If there is an earthquake:
After an earthquake, be sure that no flammable items have fallen or spilled near natural gas appliances.
If you detect a strong natural gas odor or hear gas blowing, call the NW Natural emergency line at 800-882-3377.
If you turn off your gas, leave it off and contact NW Natural to have your service restored.
Be aware that in the event of a major emergency, increased work volumes may cause service delays. It could be days before a service technician can be scheduled to restore service at your home.
If an earthquake shut off valve was installed, a customer needs to contact a contractor to reset the valve and relight their natural gas appliances.
